Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is an advanced form of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) used primarily to treat male infertility. In this procedure, a single healthy sperm is directly injected into the cytoplasm of a mature egg using a fine needle under a microscope. This significantly increases the chances of fertilization, especially when sperm count, motility, or morphology is poor, or in cases of previously failed fertilization with standard IVF.

When is ICSI recommended?

  • Low sperm count or poor sperm quality
  • Blockages preventing sperm release
  • Previous IVF failure due to fertilization issues
  • Use of frozen sperm or eggs
  • Retrieval of sperm surgically (e.g., from testicular tissue)

ICSI has revolutionized fertility treatments by offering couples with severe male factor infertility a real chance at achieving pregnancy.
